View Full Version : What is the best piston?

In my marathon 'fix the aug' session I managed to destroy a cheap chinese piston in a day. I need a new reliable piston. Any ideas on what works the best and what would last the longest? I'm only running 8.4v batteries through an m85 spring so I don't need the best, just the one that will last the longest.

I like the green Deep Fire pistons. I got one for Sean's AK and it was very high quality. The black Systema (M170 rated) are very nice. Used it for a long time and it shows no wear.

EVERY cheap Korean piston I have seen has broken in one round (3/3 so far), even at 300. I don't even know how they can sell those with a clear conscience.

Aug gave me feeding issues so I'm guessing it lasted 1000-2000 cycles. That seems a little... underacheiving even for a cheap piston. The quality seems to have slipped a year back when I was working on Frankengun they lasted a lot a longer and seemed to be the same model.

I didn't get 1000 rounds between the last 2 pistons from Korea. The Systema looked like it just came out of the box last time I opened the gear box.

Here is a website that helped me when I was looking for a piston. I went through a couple in my M4 and finally decided to go with the guarder polycarbon. I also compared prices and it was the best bang for the buck.

Better than nothing to get it up and running. Got one coming from Redwolf, but it will get the AUG working for next weeks game. :) Please bring the JG one to the game tomorrow. The piston in G36 has been there for a long while now so it will be necessary some time soon.

Have you ever had feeding problems with your AUG? Seems the gearbox won't stay secure enough and moves a little back in its housing leading to feeding issues. Seems very strange that the small retaining plate in the stock has such tiny little bolts to hold the recoil and the pressure from the trigger back.

Think I nailed the problem down.

The upgraded feeding nozzle was about 1-2mm too long. I'm guessing when Chris assembled it with the mosfet there was a wire at the front of the motor spacing it out just the right amount. I checked the web and saw that all the stock guns have the wires to the back of the motor. Did that and the gun stopped feeding because of the feeding nozzle. Spaced the gearbox back a few mm with some stickers and the feeding issue went away.

Then, just as I got it shooting perfectly every time on semi, a rash burst of auto killed the piston so it won't fire at all. Once a good piston is installed I (hope...) that all the issues will go away :)

I think I also need to get a couple of better springs for both my aegs. the g36 and the aug are shooting 260fps, about the same as my gas pistol. I may just have to get my hands on some m90s from somewhere.

Does anyone have 2 m90 springs they don't need? I have a box of springs, but they are all 100 or 110.

I think there's a 90 or 2 in that box of parts I'm going to give you tomorrow. The original nozzle is there too. The wiring when I gave it to you was not the same as when I used it. I resoldered all the wires after I removed the mosfet with a heavier gauge wire, that might be your issue.

I used it for years in many different upgraded configurations and never had any feed issues.

After some hunting around the internet it seems that aluminium pistons are the strongest option out there. Mtom has a hurricane one for 50,000. It seems silly to need such a piston, but it may solve the wear problem for a very long time.

After 2 days of tinkering and cursing the stupid airsoft guns I finally figured out that they were stripping pistons because..... there wasn't enough grease on the o-ring! So, for the benefit of people like me who overlook the obvious remember to put a little grease on the o-ring before you put gearbox back together...

Airsoft gun gearboxes have to be the most annoying things ever...
